A new booking system for vans and trailers will come into force at the Gairloch and Ullapool Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) from Monday 29th June 2026.

Householders taking vans under 3.5 tonnes or trailers to either site will be limited to one visit per week and must book a slot 48 hours in advance.

Vehicles weighing 3.5 tonnes or more, as well as tippers, flat-bed trucks of any weight, and plant vehicles, will not be accepted at any HWRC.

Waste from small-scale DIY tasks will only be permitted in cars and will be limited to one visit per day.

Highland Council has given notice that culvert replacement work at the entrance to Diabaig village will begin on Monday 22nd June.

Temporary bridge units will be in place during the day, with the road closed overnight from 9pm to 6am.

Residents, visitors and diners should be on the correct side of the closure by 9pm, or park on the requisite side and continue on foot.

Emergency access will be maintained throughout, and the work is due to finish by Sunday 5th July.

 

In response to callouts hitting a record high in 2025, Mountaineering Scotland is relaunching its free online course, ‘Sofa 2 Summit’

Originally launched in 2021, the programme is aimed at giving anyone the knowledge and confidence to head into the hills safely.

As part of the relaunch, Mountaineering Scotland’s team of experienced outdoor instructors have updated the content with fresh videos, revised advice and guidance.

The free course is open to anyone from complete beginners to those wanting to refresh their knowledge of best practice.
