NHS 24 is raising awareness of the dangers of spiking in an effort to protect the public during the busy summer events season.

Spiking involves giving someone alcohol or drugs without their consent, usually by adding substances to drinks. Typically, this occurs at social events, bars and nightclubs.

Recognizing the signs of spiking is crucial, as the signs can appear rapidly.

Common symptoms can include sudden dizziness, confusion, slurred speech, and loss of consciousness.

Safer Scotland’s tips to keep yourself safe from spiking include: not leaving drinks unattended, never accepting a drink from a stranger, and not tasting anyone else’s drink.

If you suspect you or someone else has been spiked, call 111 for advice - or 999 in an emergency.
