The Gairloch Community Car Scheme & Hospital Car is looking for volunteer drivers to continue its work providing local and hospital transport for those in the community without access to their own transport. Those living within a 25mile radius of Gairloch are eligible to use the service and the scheme is looking for drivers from throughout the area.

Volunteers need to have their own car and a clean driving license while the scheme has two cars which can be used when providing hospital transport. Volunteers can choose their own availability and all expenses are covered by GCCS. More information is available from

Dundonnel Mountain Rescue Team has been kept busy over the last week with call outs to assist climbers, walkers and a fisherman. Working with the air ambulance team, an injured walker was rescued in stormy weather on Seana Bhraigh, near Ullapool, then an injured fisherman was airlifted to hospital a few days later, and another walker was then helped to an ambulance on Monday.

The team is a registered charity made up entirely of volunteers. it is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and relies on donations to carry out its work.

Figures published this week reveal that 28 people were killed in road accidents on the A9 between 2021 and 2025. 321 collisions resulting in injury were recorded during that period, 134 of which were considered serious.

The figures have led to renewed calls for the full dualling of the road to be speeded up with Fergus Ewing, independent MSP for Inverness and Nairn, saying the risk of being in a road accident is three times greater on single carriageway roads compared with dual carriageways and ten times greater than on motorways.

The third section of dualling from Tomatin to Moy is currently in progress with the award of the contract for the next section from the Tay Crossing to Ballinluig expected this summer and the procurement process for the section after that from Pitlochry to Killiecrankie also starting this summer. Full dualling is now scheduled for completion by 2035.
