Some traffic disruption is expected tomorrow when telephone works will affect the A890 Auchtertyre to Strathcarron to Achnasheen road which will be closed for a distance of approximately 260 metres from the entrance to a property known as The Old School to the entrance to a property known as Sealladh an Eilein.

The closure is to allow British Telecom to replace poles. Local and emergency vehicle access will be maintained while the work is being carried out and timed access will be available to all traffic.

A special meeting of Wester Loch Ewe Community Council is taking place tomorrow in collaboration with the National Trust for Scotland to gauge public support for tackling the problem of the spread of rhododendron ponticum.

The meeting will be addressed by Rob Dewar, the NTS invasive non-native species officer, who will explain the nature of the problem and ways of tackling it with the audience being asked to register their interest in participating in the eradication work. The focus of the proposed work will be on the area from Naast to Cove but anyone from further afield who has an interest is welcome to attend. The meeting will be at 7.30pm at Inverasdale School.

The Highland Council has confirmed details of projects in the Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh ward which have been supported by the Discretionary Fund budget since the beginning of the year.

The eight approved applications range from just over £200 for Remembrance Day wreaths to almost £2,400 given to Welcome Ullapool to replace public benches and picnic tables. A total of more than £7,000 has been given from the discretionary budget which allows councilors to commit funds to local projects in line with the Council’s objectives and outcomes.

As the current muirburn season draws to a close, NatureScot has reminded landowners that new legislation was introduced in 2024 which will make it an offence to carry out muirburn without a licence. No date has been set for the new scheme but it is expected to apply to season 2025/26 likely to start on 15th September this year.

When licence applications open, landowners or managers will need to provide details of the area to be burnt, evidence of training, confirmation of compliance with the Muirburn Code and peat depth survey data which may be optional depending on the area and licensable purpose. More information is available on the NatureScot website.
