The Scottish Government is being urged to introduce a dedicated fund to support local journalism and protect local democracy.
Far North MSP David Green has written to Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth, warning that trusted local journalism is increasingly important amid rising misinformation.
His call follows a campaign by The Scottish Beacon, a network of 25 independent local news organisations across Scotland, following the UK Government’s new £12 million Local News Fund.
Mr Green is calling for similar support for local print, digital and broadcast outlets, all of whom face financial pressures, leaving some communities without dedicated local news coverage.
Crumbs, the sandwich and bakery takeaway in Gairloch, has announced it will close after more than ten years in business.
The owners say a significant drop in customer numbers, fewer visitors and rising costs have made the business no longer viable.
They also say the arrival of the Co-op has had a greater impact than expected and, in addition, the building is due to be sold.
Crumbs will remain open and trading normally until at least mid-October, while existing cake and catering orders will be completed as planned.
Road users are being advised of changes to traffic management on the A9, north of the current Tomatin to Moy roadworks, from Friday.
The revised layout, south of Daviot, is expected to remain in place for around four weeks.
A temporary 40-mile-an-hour speed limit will be introduced, with one lane of traffic maintained in each direction.
Drivers are being urged to follow temporary signs and allow extra time for their journeys.
Overnight resurfacing will also take place during the final week, with temporary traffic signals and a short convoy system in operation.
