he Highland Council is pleased to announce new waste and recycling figures for the region following then introduction of new services which began in April last year and which has been funded to the tune of £7.11 million pounds from the Scottish Government’s Recycling Improvement Fund.
The latest figures from the Council’s Waste Services team show a reduction of approximately 7,500 tonnes of waste collected at the kerbside and sent for disposal in the last 12 months compared with the previous period. Other recyclable material streams have seen an increase in the last year including clothing and textiles collected at Recycling Points of which a total of 1,207 tonnes were collected, an increase of 170 tonnes, and small domestic appliances of which an additional 130 tonnes have been separated for recycling.
A new business has been set up in Applecross roasting coffee beans to supply cafes, restaurants and shops, locally and beyond. David Davidson who has lived in Applecross since 2018 completed a training course at the Scottish Barista Academy and is converting part of the Applecross Campsite kitchen into a fully functioning roastery.
The new business will source its beans from ethical importers originating in various countries including Colombia, Rwanda and Tanzania and hopes to expand its operation by growing its customer base along the North Coast 500.

Travellers’ Choice winners are determined based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings posted on Tripadvisor over a 12-month period. To be eligible for an award, a property, business, destination or point of interest must have been listed on Tripadvisor for at least 12 months, must receive a threshold number of reviews within the evaluation period of that award and must maintain or exceed a particular rating on Tripadvisor.
