Ullapool Fire and Light is looking for help from the community to enable its annual Creel Tree and winter lights to be in place this year. Storage space is required for the equipment without which it may not be possible for the features to be installed this year.
Local landowners and the Highland Council have already been approached but no solution has yet been found. Anyone who can help is asked to contact Dave Maxwell of Ullapool Fire and Light on 07873 736906.
The Martin Moran Foundation has opened nominations for its Mountain Adventure Programme for 2027. Each year the Foundation takes a small group of young people aged 16 to 18 into the Scottish Highlands for a fully funded week of mountain adventure.
Many of the participants face barriers to the outdoors, or a difficult time in their lives so the Foundation gives them the skills, the challenge and the community to discover what they are capable of. Under the guidance of qualified instructors, young people learn the practical skills to explore wild places safely, from navigation to moving on the hill. They are kitted out with everything they need for the week, and it is theirs to keep, so they can carry on adventuring long after they return home. Further details are available on the Foundation’s website.
Police Scotland is carrying out a dedicated week of action targeting the illegal use of e-bikes and e-scooters which are becoming increasingly common across Scotland. Most are used appropriately and in line with legal guidelines. However, some vehicles are modified to exceed speed and power limits, which can reclassify them under motorcycle legislation.
So far in 2026 Police Scotland has seized more than 1,000 of these vehicles, 561 e-bikes and 441 e-scooters. Officers from Road Policing and local divisions across Scotland are carrying out targeted activity across the country this week aimed at removing these vehicles from the roads. The public is reminded that e-scooters are not permitted on public roads, pavements or other public spaces, as they do not meet the necessary legal standards. Their use is only legal on private land with the landowner's consent.
