A special meeting of The Highland Council will take place next Tuesday 25th August to consider a draft Visitor Levy proposal although no decision is being sought at this stage on whether a Visitor Levy should be introduced. Councillors will instead be asked to consider a draft scheme proposal and, if approved, agree to a statutory 12 week public consultation to gather views from residents, businesses and communities.

The draft proposal is based on a tiered fixed-rate Visitor Levy per room or area per night, rather than a percentage charge on accommodation costs. The levy would apply across the whole Highland Council area for only nine months of the year, excluding the months of December, January and February and accommodation providers would retain 5% of the levy collected to help cover administration costs.

Should councillors approve the draft scheme for consultation, a further report would be presented later this year after which any decision to introduce a levy would be subject to future council approval and an implementation period of at least 18 months.

The Ullapool Flower Craft and Produce Show celebrates 25 years tomorrow and is making a special presentation to mark the occasion. Every entrant will receive a seeded bookmark featuring artwork created by local student Megan Ross which can be planted to enjoy some colour and life after the show.

All garden produce, batch baking or craft projects are welcome. The organisers say there is something special about seeing the amazing things grown, made, baked or created by the local community. The show in Ullapool Village Hall is open to the public from 12 noon.

Inverness Caley Thistle starts the weekend football programme when it plays Partick Thistle at home in the SPFL Championship this evening. Kick off is at 7.30 and the match is being televised live on BBC Scotland.

Ross County has its match tomorrow in League One away against Airdrieonians. The teams played each other several weeks ago in the League Cup when County won three nil. Kick off tomorrow is at 3 o’clock.
