68-year-old Hughie Stirling is crewing on the Ajjur, a civilian sailing boat participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla.

The vessel is part of an international, non-violent, humanitarian convoy carrying volunteers and medical aid intended for Gaza.

Mr Stirling was one of three Ullapool men involved in the 2026 mission.  His two compatriots have returned safely.

The works, which are part of the Western Isles HVDC Mainland Cable Project, were to commence in June but have been re-scheduled to avoid the height of the tourist season.

Ahead of the works, two community drop-in sessions will be held on Monday 8th June:

    • between 4pm and 6pm in Aultbea Hall and
    • between 7pm and 9pm in Badcaul Church, Dundonnell.

Further information on closure dates, timings and access will be issued in the coming weeks.

Inverness bakery Harry Gow has been crowned Scottish Baker of the Year 2026  in the annual awards ceremony this week.

The company beat off stiff competition from six fellow highland bakeries - including Ashers, The Three Little Bakers, and The Cake Shop by Black Isle Baking - to become the first to win the prestigious award three times.

The judges applauded the achievement of the Highland bakeries, highlighting the strength of local baking talent and the important role these businesses play within communities.

In a prelude to the competition, Harry Gow claimed the unofficial world title for the largest empire biscuit, with a 78-inch masterpiece.
