Highland Council has welcomed the news that a funding boost has been granted to support households struggling in fuel poverty…
An increase of £750,000 has been granted from the Scottish and Southern Energy Renewables Highland Development Fund. The grant will support home improvements which can help reduce fuel costs and also therefore improve living conditions. This additional money will join the long term funding so far of £2.6 million provided by SSE to support households already.

The Scottish Government has committed itself to a full review of Crofting Law within the next 2 years. The Scottish Crofting Federation (The SCF) want to engage with the wider crofting communities and get their opinions. The main topic for discussion is that of Common Grazings. Locally, The SCF will be present at either the Macphail Centre in Ullapool on Nov 18th or in Oban on 23rd November.
The annual Guga Hunt off the northern most tip of Lewis did not take place in 2026.
The Hunt for young gannet chicks required a licence this year from NatureScot, the Government’s public body. However, under the Freedom of Information Act requested by the local MP for the Western Isles, its been revealed that although it was publicly said that it would be harmful to the gannet population, if the Hunt went ahead, the actual scientific advice was that the Hunt, and subsequent capture of 500 young gannet chicks for meat, would have no detrimental affect on the overall gannet colony.
