Local Headlines - 15 May 2026

Motorists are reminded of the temporary closure of the C1087 Beallach Na Ba road to Applecross tomorrow from 10am until 12.30pm to facilitate the running of the annual Beallach Na Ba Cycle Sportive.

Other roads in the area including the Applecross to Shieldaig coast road, although remaining open, will be busy as 500 cyclists take part in the event. During the closure, access to the Beallach will only be permitted at the discretion of event organisers for emergency services, pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles requiring access to or from premises.

This year’s nominated charity for the Sportive is Prostate Cancer UK with over £5,000 already raised.

Fèisean nan Gàidheal is delighted to announce that applications for Fuaran 2026 are now open.

The project offers young people, aged 16 to 25, the opportunity to research Gaelic songs and heritage related to their own region, their own family or of other significance to them.

Through Fuaran, participants will work with experts and tradition bearers during a training weekend in order to develop their skills in research, singing, performing and creating digital content. They will have the opportunity to create podcasts, recordings and videos about their own research and to share their work through social media, concerts and public events. Since Fuaran began in 2014, over 70 participants have been involved creating a song database containing over 200 recordings and videos.

The deadline for applications is 29 May 2026.

In the weekend football, there’s a youth tournament on the astro pitch at Ullapool High School tomorrow with teams from Wester Ross Youth Football Club and Ullapool taking part along with teams from 5 other clubs.

Wester Ross will take twenty two players to Ullapool with teams from P4&5 and P6&7. The P4&5 team will be playing as a team in a tournament for the first time. Kick off is at 11.30 tomorrow morning and spectator support will be welcome.
