Local Headlines - 13 October 2026

The Highland Council is urging community groups to apply now for grit bins ahead of the winter season.

The Council’s winter service begins tomorrow, October the 14th, with plans to treat almost seven thousand kilometres of road.

It says it has around thirty-five thousand tonnes of salt in stock, one hundred gritters and two hundred staff ready for winter conditions.

Community and volunteer groups can contact their local Area Roads Office for information on the Winter Resilience Programme.

Homeowners across Scotland are being reminded to dispose of unwanted items responsibly, as part of a new anti-flytipping campaign.

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful says twenty-six thousand tonnes of waste are dumped illegally across Scotland every year.

The campaign advises householders to use council recycling centres or registered waste disposal services.

Anyone whose rubbish is traced back to them after being illegally dumped could face a fine of up to five hundred pounds.

High Life Highland is reminding local groups that funding is still available for projects encouraging young people to take part in sport.

The fund, originally launched to support summer activities, has been extended, and applications are still being welcomed.

Both Ross County and Inverness Caley Thistle have fixtures this evening.

County has a home match in the KDM Evolution Trophy against Forfar Athletic.

County has already qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament, but winning the match would ensure it is one of the seeded teams for the round of thirty-two.

Caley Thistle has an away league match in the Championship against Queens Park, which is currently bottom of the table.

Both games kick off at 7.45 tonight.
